Safe partition changes: preflight checklist

Data preservation depends on the state of your disk and your backups. Follow this checklist before resize, merge, conversion, cloning or recovery.

Before you press Apply

  1. Identify the physical drive. Record model, capacity, partition style and existing volume labels. Disk numbers may change after reconnecting devices.
  2. Make recoverable backups. Copy personal files to another device and keep a system image when changing boot partitions.
  3. Check hardware health. Address serious SMART warnings or I/O errors before performing partition moves.
  4. Secure recovery credentials. Export authorized BitLocker keys and make trusted Windows recovery media.
  5. Confirm feature eligibility. Check your edition and whether the operation needs reboot or boot media.
  6. Preview and review. Read the pending operations list, capacity changes and destination drive before committing.
  7. Verify afterwards. Check Windows boot, file access, drive letters, BitLocker protection and expected size.
Never format a RAW or uninitialized disk just to make it visible if files on it must be recovered. Stop writes and consider imaging the disk first.

For encryption and system boot changes, seek professional support if you do not have a tested recovery plan.
